It's clear, absent of the dark smoke that billows from the boilers of Kenya's other tea factories. Of the 66 tea factories under the management of the Kenya Tea Development Authority, Makomboki is the only one that doesn't use firewood in the processing of its tea.

Muslim leaders have called on the Kenyan government to stop victimizing innocent Muslims as part of anti-terror efforts and instead engage with the Muslim community to address extremism. The coastal Kenyan villages bringing their mangrove forest back to life
Around 30 miles south of Mombasa, a beaten footpath stretches away from the main road, meanders around shrubs and coconut trees, and leads into Gazi village. The small settlement of mud-walled houses and a few shops extends up to the edge of a mangrove forest, which itself gives way to the vast Indian Ocean.

Azure sky, clear sea and a busy seafront create the picturesque views of Lamu Old Town, the oldest and Swahili settlement in east Africa and an Unesco world heritage site. In a few years however, the idyll might be disrupted by multi-billion dollar coal power project planned for nearby. “There can be no doubt that a project of this scale and scope, in an area as remote and protected as Lamu, cannot help but have profound negative impacts on the heritage,” said a 2015 report on the area from Unesco’s World Heritage Committee.
